In Memory of Dixie
March 1992 - March 2004
Handler: Aline Gerard
"In the summer of 1993, a shiny black dog with a white shirt
front appeared on the grounds of the Dixie White House Nursing Home. A stray
that no one missed? Hundreds of nursing home residents, past and present, miss
her now. A lost, much beloved pet? No one could get within arm's reach of her
then. A victim of abuse? Her sweet nature endeared her to all. She herself
chose her vocation: to brighten the lives of residents, many of whom had to
leave their own pets behind. An open door was an invitation to her, and she
skipped none. With a non-stop wagging tail, a laughing face and a friendly
paw, she converted even dog-fearers into Dixie-lovers. So good natured, she
willingly endured being dressed in seasonal costumes merely to amuse her
friends .. or, as she knew them, her "buddies". Her buddies, her doctors and
their staffs, everyone who met her knew she was a very special being. We all
feel the loss of this creature of unknown origin, and I feel blessed that she
made me part of her mission. Beddy-bye, Dix.
Rest well, girl." Aline Gerard
